HL7 FHIR DevDays is all about making healthcare interoperability accessible to anyone. That’s why we want students to not only understand the theory behind interoperability and exchanging healthcare data, but also letting them engage with it and put theory into practice.
We invite universities to join us in Boston for a day of working and sharing with other students and participating in the newest revolution in healthcare interoperability.
This is your chance to be creative and compete for the Student Track Cup!
The student track is scheduled on Wednesday, 20 June 2018.
What happens in the Student Track?
Prepare by completing an assignment at home in groups of two to four students.
At the event itself, we will start with a presentation about interoperability by one of the FHIR core team members: either Grahame Grieve, Lloyd McKenzie or Ewout Kramer.
During a hackathon you can engage with other students and compare your solutions to the assignment:
- Can you exchange data with each other?
- What about the FHIR data structures? Did you find them easy to understand?
- Was it difficult to conform to a profile in your application?
- Do your FHIR resource instances look alike? Can you read the other groups’ FHIR resources in your solution?
Finally, you will present your group’s results during a short presentation:
- Small demonstration
- Lessons learned
- Results from comparison with other groups
At the end of the day we will have drinks and dinner in Boston.
How can you participate?
- Form a group of two to four students and find yourself a mentor at your university
- Make sure your university provides funding for travel and stay
- Complete the registration form
- Introduce yourself in Zulip on the student track channel
- Prepare the assignment
- Pick a smart device (wearable, body scale, etc.), anything health-related with an open API. For inspiration you can take a look here: http://www.programmableweb.com/category/health/apis?search_id=141882&category=19988
- Get the actual data: Heart rates, distances, body weight etc. using the device’s API.
- Map the data to FHIR resources (hint: try looking into the Device resources). A list of all resources can be found here: https://www.hl7.org/fhir/resourcelist.html)
- Transform the device’s data into FHIR resources
- Send the FHIR resources to a FHIR server. Available test servers can be found here: http://wiki.hl7.org/index.php?title=Publicly_Available_FHIR_Servers_for_testing
- Try retrieving the data from the FHIR server
- Prepare a pitch of your application of maximum 10 minutes + 2 minutes for questions
- Come to DevDays
- Try to connect to other students’ applications. Are these compatible? Can you make it work?
- Add your findings to your presentation
- Pitch your application and present your findings to co-students and jury
- Have fun at the night program
- There is no cost associated with participating in the Wednesday events
- In case you wish to extend your participation, the fee per delegate will be:
– 2 days attendance: Tuesday & Wednesday or Wednesday & Thursday: $300
– 3 days attendance: Tuesday – Thursday: $600

Registrations are processed on a first come, first served basis. In case of great interest we will allow a maximum of one application per university.
